Wow. It has been a long time since we had some news to report. But now, the big buzz around RAI Laboratory is the upcoming release of FoxHunt, our direction-finding application for iPhone. FoxHunt was designed for the amateur radio foxhunter and is a replacement for the compass, map, ruler, pen, GPS, eraser, and crying towel that were common during the Dark Years in direction-finding. FoxHunt was designed for the amateur radio foxhunter and is a replacement for the compass, map, ruler, pen, GPS, eraser, and crying towel that were common during the Dark Years in direction-finding. FoxHunt:
- Tracks every bearing you take and records it in the in-phone database.
- Does all of that nasty magnetic declination stuff ("Let me see, do I add or subtract?").
- Is mistake-tolerant. You can rate your own bearings - so the ones you are really confident about are distinguished from the ones you think may be wrong
- Automatically computes and maps the intersections of your bearing lines.
- Based on the importance you assign to your bearings and the derived importance of the intersections, automatically computes the probable location of the "fox"...
- (cool part begins here)... and, using the built-in goodies in the iPhone, gives you driving directions to the fox. (end of cool part)
